DATELINE RAF Grafton Underwood 25 May: Weary from hours of delivering devastatingly crucial blows from the bomb bay and pounding the Nazi War Machine into submission, this B17 Flying Fortress returns to base--or so the story may have read in 1943. Instead, this majestic aircraft, one of 12,731 B17s built, along with a B24 Liberator, B25 Mitchell, P51 Mustangs, and a T28 Trojan brought delight to all who wanted to see history in action over the Memorial Day weekend at Livermore Airport (KLVK), about one hour's drive from San Francisco in the heart of wine country.
The B17 was the beloved aircraft featured in the movie "Memphis Belle." The aircraft "909," featured in this and other photos is her twin sister. What a great Father's Day Gift! This and many other aviation photos shot by well reputed aviation photographer and commercial pilot John King are available for a limited time on FlyerFocus.com.
